Athlete / Mentor and Changemaker
From “wild boy” to world-class ultrarunner, Chung uses trail running to inspire the next generation of athletes and environmental stewards.
Born in Guangzhou and raised in Hong Kong, Chung has always felt most at home in nature. As a child growing up in Kowloon, he’d spend afternoons climbing trees, catching insects, and roaming the hills above the city. Self-described as a “wild boy,” his curiosity eventually led him to a career as a fireman, and then, in 2011, to trail running.
Within two years, he was one of Hong Kong’s most promising athletes. From there, the path steepened. He soon joined the Asia Pacific Adventure Team.
Chung has since become a defining figure in Asia’s trail scene. He was the first Hong Kong and Chinese runner to place in the top 10 at UTMB, finishing 6th in 2019. He went on to win the 4 Deserts Grand Slam, The North Face 100, and the Golden 100 in Hong Kong. He also completed the 330km Tor des Géants in Italy which he describes as “one of the most demanding and rewarding races.” Plus, he set the fastest known time on the MacLehose Trail, a 100km route through Hong Kong’s mountains.
More than podiums, trail running, he says, transformed his life: physically, mentally, and emotionally. It taught him patience, perseverance, and the power of community. That same spirit now guides his mission off the trail: to help young people build confidence, reconnect with nature, and find a sense of purpose.
“Trail running taught me resilience, adaptability and perseverance. Now I want to use it to help my community discover their own potential.”
Chung
In 2020, he launched The Peak Hunter Foundation, offering mentorship, training, and environmental education to youth. Through initiatives like Project Endless, Dark 45, and the Peak Runner Youth Race, he’s creating space for a new generation of trail runners rooted in resilience and respect for the land.
A deep commitment to sustainability shapes his vision. As a NNormal ambassador, he sees performance and environmental protection as inseparable. NNormal’s repairable, durable products support his toughest runs and align with the values he teaches in his youth programs.
Today, Chung is still pushing limits, on and off the trail. Over the next few years, he hopes to expand his projects across Asia, reach more underprivileged youth, and build a global network of runners who care about community as much as competition.
Trail running is more than sport. Chung proves this. It can be a tool for transformation, a bridge between generations, and a path to leave no trace.
